Romanian Govt Sets New University Hiring Rules

The Romanian Government decided Wednesday that contests for university teacher positions will be open to the public and candidates for professor positions will be evaluated by a commission that must include a foreign professor.

Moreover, at least three of the members of the evaluation commission must be professors at other universities.

Education Minister Daniel Funeriu said contests for lecturer and teaching assistant positions vacant since April 2009 will also be organized.

Universities have until May 30 to send to the Education Ministry requests to fill the respective vacant positions.

Romanian Senate Approves New Car Tax Formula

Romania’s Senate on Wednesday approved a bill setting a new formula for the calculation of the car tax, which takes into account the vehicle’s value according to brand, type and engine.

The bill, put forward by social democrat deputy Robert Sorin Negoita, says the tax is 0.75 of the car’s value, which will be determined according to a catalog drawn up by the Ministry of Finance.

The Senate adopted the bill despite a negative report by the committee for budget and finance, which argued that the bill does not respect legislative standards. The committee also said the catalog of car values should be developed by technical experts, not by the Finance Ministry.

feature photo

The Romanian Constitutional Court on Wednesday ruled the Social Dialog Code and the law capping teachers’ salaries in 2011 are constitutional.

On April 18, the Government sought a vote of confidence in Parliament to pass the two bills into legislation.

The opposition did not submit a no-confidence motion against the Government, but challenged the laws at the Constitutional Court.

The claim was signed by 110 deputies of the Social Democratic and Liberal parties.
